ROSA IRRIDENS Focke apud Diels in Notes Roy. Bot. Gard. Edinb. VII:237(1912) (section synstylae?) A doubtful species described from the Dali range in Yunnan, from specimens collected by George Forrest. It is very similar to R. banksiae, but has flowers in dense umbels. We illustrated what I think is probably this species in ‘Roses’ p. 31, under the name R. banksiae var. normalis, but it was flowering in mid-May at the foot of the Dali range, much later than most of the R. banksiae in the area. From the photograph it is not clear whether this belongs to section synstylae or banksianae. As far as I know this species is not in cultivation at present. Probably hardy in zones 6-8. Photographed in Yunnan southern China
