Rosa x hardii Cels A chance hybrid raised by M. Hardy before 1836, possibly as early as 1832. A cross between Rosa persica and possibly Rosa clinophylla, which was growing nearby. Very rare in cultivation as it is difficult to keep for long because it is susceptable to mildew, it is best kept in a cool airy greenhouse in winter and then put out in full sun during the summer. The flowers are good strong yellow with a red eye, 5cm across. A loose growing shrub to a height of 180cm, summer flowering. Some scent. Alexandre Hardy, the breeder was chief horticulturist at the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris between 1829 and 1847, he cultivated many seedlings the most famous of which is the lovely white Damask ‘Mme Hardy’.
