A miniature China, introduced by Henri Correvon in 1922. The story of its introduction is that it was found growing in a pot on a window in Switzerland, and brought to M. Correvon in Geneva. This was not the first time a miniature China seedling appeared, as one, a single-flowered variety, is illustrated by Redouté, and before that by Miss Lawrance in 1796; it had probably been introduced from China. 'Roulettii' forms a small bush to one foot (30cm) tall, with numerous deep pink double flowers, and small pointed leaves. It is the ancestor of most modern miniatures; ‘Baby Gold Star’ raised in Spain by Pedro Dot was an early cross which showed the potential of these miniatures, but their breeding was not taken up on a large scale until Ralph Moore began his program in the late 1930’s with another ‘Roulettii’ hybrid, ‘Tom Thumb’, and ‘Oakington Ruby’, said to have been found by an old lady in the garden of Ely Cathedral in England. Photographed at Roseraie l’Hay-les-Rose south of Paris, France by Bill Grant.
