An early introduction to Europe from Chinese gardens, reported in 1792. Usually a dwarf, around 1 foot 6inches (30cm) tall, with deep red flowers flecked with white on slender nodding stalks. This rose is still grown in western China, and is long-lived in gardens, though never very strong, needing good cultivation to grow into a decent bush. It was considered lost in Europe until re-introduced from Belfield in Bermuda in 1956. It is the parent of most of the early deep red roses, to which it gave the rather weak flower stalks. Photographed by Bill Grant. |
