Introduced 1916. A low shrub rose with wiry stems to 1.2m, with glands, and long straight prickles. Leaflets 3 or 5, wedge-shaped, not stalked, usually less than 1cm long, with blunt teeth towards the apex, almost glabrous. Stipules with glandular margins. Bracts absent. Flowers solitary on short shoots, bright pink with a darker centre, 3.5-6cm across. Sepals around 3cm long, pinnate and bristly. Stamens very numerous. Styles not exserted from the hip. Hips bristly, dull red, around 2cm across. Described from the Sacramento mountains in southern New Mexico, where temperatures can reach -30°C. This attractive rose is hardy but needs a hot, dry and sunny site to flower well. It is illustrated in the Botanical Magazine t. 9070. Var. stellata, which is less often cultivated, differs in being smaller and having starry hairs as well as glands on the stems and leaves. It is found in western Texas, southern New Mexico and northern Arizona, around the Grand canyon in the upper Sonoran zone, growing in dry, rocky places at around 2000m, rocky places. Zone 5-6, will tolerate -20°C, or less provided that it is dry in the winter. The view was photographed at Kasteel Hex Belgium. | ||||||
