A Hybrid Tea introduced in 1945 by Meilland. Flowers very large, good repeat flowering. WFRS Hall of Fame 1976, GM Portland 1944, GM NRS 1947, GM ARS 1947, Golden Rose of the Hague 1965. Complex slightly unsure parentage: ('George Dickson') x 'Souvenir de Claudius Pernet') x ('Joanna Hill' x 'Chas. P. Kilham') x 'Margaret McGredy'. Probably the best loved rose of all time, launched after the Second World War it became a symbol of better times to come. Very large creamy yellow blooms touched with red, very variable from soil to soil and in different weather. A strong bush that can easily be allowed to grow to 5 feet high (1.5m). There is a climbing sport and also many colour selections the best known of which is the much stronger coloured 'Chicago Peace'.Photographed at the garden of Rosalie and Peter Henderson New Zealand Sounds and at the Botanical Garden of Adelaide South Australia and at the Sangerhausen Rosarium Germany. |
