ROSA GALLICA var PUMILA (Jacq.) Regel.

A dwarf variety of R. gallica, with suckering stems 20-30cm tall, oval-rounded leaflets and single, red or pink flowers. Flower stalks and calyx sparsely glandular. Reported wild in Spain and Italy, but the form from Sigale in the Alpes Maritimes probably belongs to this variety; this has deep red flowers veined with purple, around 6cm across. Hardiness zone 6.

The specimen with two flowers was photographed by Bill Grant. The specimen with three flowers was photographed in the wild in near Sigale in southern France.
