Rosa bracteata Wendl. THE MACARTNEY ROSE Introduced in 1793 by Lord Macartney's expedition to Peking. Native of south east China and Taiwan. An evergreen climber up to 6m in height, with hooked prickles in pairs and bristles. Leaflets 5-11, obvate, obtuse, shining dark green above, glabrous or downy on the midrib beneath, up to 5cm long; stipules lacinate. Flowers white, to 10cm across solitary on a short pedicel hidden by the large downy lacinate bracts. Hips globose, orange-red. It is rather tender, requiring a warm wall or a frost free climate, when it thrives it will flower continuously from June until late autumn. Zone 9, will survive down to –5°C | ||||
