A low-growing and bushy shrub rose with densely bristly, dark red stems to 1m. Leaflets 7-11, elliptic or broadly elliptic, obtuse with sharp, glandular teeth, glabrous or slightly pubescent beneath. Stipules entire. Pedicels with stalked glands; bracts lanceolate. Flowers solitary on short shoots, white delicately shaded with pink, 2.5-3cm across. Styles not exserted from the hip. Hips ovoid, orange-red. In Korea. Introduced in 1917. The plant shown here has unusually richly-coloured flowers for the species. R. koreana Kom. should not be confused with R. x coryana Hurst, a hybrid between R. roxburghii and R. macrophylla with deep pinkish-red flowers 6-7cm across. It was raised in the University Botanic Garden, Cambridge and named after Reginald Cory who was a considerable benefactor to the garden. It was photographed at Cavriglia. by Bill Grant.
