First mentioned in the catalogue of Louis Van Houtte in 1842 An upright shrub around 1m. Leaflets elliptic, often 3 rather than the usual 5. Flowers solitary or in pairs, rather small, double with a button eye; in colour purplish-crimson, later with shades of mauve, fading most beautifully. Scent excellent. Photographed at the Sangerhausen Rosarium Germany.
There is some doubt as to whether this rose agrees with Van Houtte's original, which was described as soft pink (rose tendre).
Adele Courtios was a lady of the demi-monde in the second Empire, a queen of fashion and of a life of excess. |
