An old Climbing Tea rose introduced by Robert Fortune in 1945. An old Chinese rose, also shown in our Tea rose section where there are more pictures, discovered in the garden of a rich mandarin at Ningpo by Robert Fortune in 1845. Flowers bronzy or fawn yellow, sometimes veined and shot-through with pink and purple, mainly in spring when the plant hangs with the weight of flowers. Stems to 20 feet (6m) or so when old, very thorny when young. Often found in hedges in northern California. A hardy variety, min. -10°C, but best in a warm climate. Photographed by Bill Grant.
