An alba, or an alba hybrid, of unknown origin, found by Nancy Lindsay at a convent in Elboeuf, Normandy in 1940. Stems to 1.5m; the twigs with few long prickles. Leaves dark green and sharp-pointed, with a smooth texture. Flowers semi-double, pale salmon-pink. Sepals with very few lobes. Hips freely produced. Its scent of myrrh, or a hint of aniseed, caused Graham Thomas to speculate that ‘Belle Amour’ is a hybrid of ‘Ayrshire Splendens’, which has similar colouring and scent. Easy to grow and reputed to be good in poor soils. Zone 3, surviving -25°C, and probably less. The field photograph was taken in the garden of Richard Rix Kent UK and the other in the garden of David Austin’s Nursery, Albrighton, Wolverhampton, UK. | ||||||||||||||||||||
