A China-Bourbon hybrid, like an improved version of ‘Old Blush’. The flowers are cupped, plain lilac-pink, fully double, of good substance, with a delicate scent. It flowers particularly well in autumn, even in wet seasons when other roses fail. Thorns few; leaflets smooth, bluish beneath. Raised by Marcheseau in France in 1834, probably from ‘Old Blush’ x 'Mme Desprez' (a pink Bourbon). In the bush form the stems reach 5 feet (1.5m), and there is also a climbing sport called 'Setina', introduced in 1879. Although normally grown as a shrub we have seen the climbing form in California making a wonderful display as a climber. |
