Rosa carolina L. A suckering bush rarely more than 1m high with numerous internodal thorns, those at the leaf base scarcely different from the rest. Leaflets usually 5, oblong to oval or nearly round; flowers white to pink with some slight fragrance, normally solitary, often produced on the current years stems. Pedicels and hips with glandular bristles. Sepals rarely with leafy tips. Native of upland woods, dunes and prairies from Nova Scotia and New York to Minnesota and south to Maryland and Texas, flowering from May to July. Best grown on another root stock to avoid the suckering. Zone 4, will survive down to –30°C |
