An alba, known from Holland since the end of the 18th century, and illustrated by Redouté under the name Rosa damascena ‘Aurora’. An upright shrub to 2m. Leaves pale blue-green, with 7 broad, finely toothed leaflets. Buds slender; flowers in small clusters, semi-double with the outer petals reflexing as the flower opens, around 9cm across; both bud and flowers a pale bluish pink. Scent good.
This is one of the most beautiful of old roses for its clear blue-green leaves and perfect opening flower of a rich pale pink. It is easily grown and flowers well in poor conditions. I saw and photographed it in a garden, planted against the farm fence separating the garden from a cornfield, and its informal habit perfectly suited this position. Zone 3, surviving -25°C, and probably less.
Photographed at the garden of Richard Rix Kent UK. |
